I love to find products that work well, are sustainable, and fit the budget. When money is tight, and you need to stretch your dollar, creating simple DIY products like a homemade non toxic bathroom cleaner can really help.
Plus making your own cleaner where possible can help reduce the risk of toxic chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) that can negatively affect our health.
Last year, my husband and I moved into a little 2 bedroom apartment where we raised our little one and finished up our college education. When we initially moved in, our landlord shared with us a miracle combination to make a spray effective enough to break through dirt and grease and clean up a home real quick.
The Non Toxic Bathroom Cleaner Recipe:
Without further ado, here is the secret she shared with us….All you need is
1 part dish soap to 2 parts distilled white vinegar.
That is it.
You can also add a few drops of a citrus essential oil like orange or lemon to add a great smell and help with killing germs.
A little goes a long way with this as well, so you don’t have to use a ton in order to get a great result.
A Few Tips:
If you have an extra tough spot in the bathroom, spray your cleaner, wait a few minutes, then wipe. This will allow the solution to work on the soiled area a little more. More work from the solution means less elbow grease for you.
Due to the use of soap in this spray, I would suggest rinsing out the bottle between refills to avoid build up of soap over time. This will keep your bottle happy and working for a long time.
Finding a good microfiber cloth to pair with the non toxic bathroom cleaner can make a huge difference. Here’s one of my favorites.
Disclaimer: I also recognize that sometimes areas that are high traffic need good disinfecting that may not be possible through this solution. This mix is primarily intended for an all-purpose/ everyday type of cleaning. You may want to find a good disinfecting product to use occasionally during your cleaning routine.
